Instrumental care

It is important to take care of your surgical instruments, not just for the sake of safety during an operation, but also for economic reasons. There are a few important considerations regarding instrumental care today.

1. KEEP THEM CLEAN

The first and most vital consideration is to assure that the instruments are clean! If there are any blood and tissue residues on any instrument with two or more parts, corrosion is likely to occur. Some instruments are extremely difficult to clean. Some pliers that is not detachable, virtually any instrument that has two or more parts, can easily be subjected to impurities. Instruments that are not clean are not sterile!

Today, the manufacturers of surgical instruments are obliged to provide information about cleaning and sterilizing of the instruments.

2. KEEP THEM DRY

Once your instruments are clean, it is equally important to get them dry.
All types of corrosion, can only occur in a moist environment. A dry instrument do not rust, but keep in mind that the instruments often are exposed to humidity, e.g. during surgery, when in washer disinfector and when sterilizing.

3. INSPECT THE INSTRUMENTS

Another important consideration within instrumental care is to carefully inspect the instruments. Learn how to detect discoloration, corrosion and breakage in time in order to avoid accidents and save money.

4. LUBRICATE THE INSTRUMENTS

Lastly, it is important to lubricate the instruments.

All instruments that have metal surfaces moving against each other should be oiled after every wash. Lubricate scissors at the screw, artery forceps and needle holders the joint, and pliers at the screw.

TO REGULARLY SERVE THE INSTRUMENTS IS TO ASSURE THEIR QUALITY
